The West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (WGCMA) provide a high standard of health, safety and well being for all people within the workplace. Workplace Health and Safety responsibility, is not only to an employer’s own employees, but to other persons who may be required to work or enter a work site.
The principle pieces of legislation within Victoria are:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004
- Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017
- Compliance codes/code of practice eg: code of practice for the Dangerous Goods (Storage and Handling) Regulations 2012.
Risk in regards to safety, is determined by the activities required to be undertaken on individual projects.
It is expected that contractors to the WGCMA, will have their own Work Health and Safety Management System (WH&SMS) that meets the standard of the WGCMA.
Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), will be used for detailed, site-specific, safety planning at all work sites and will be re-visited daily. Everyone who enters the work site needs to read, fully understand and sign the SWMS. Before any work commences the SWMS, must be reviewed by the WGCMA.
The safety system, will inform and guide how all work at the project site is undertaken by the contractors and their employees.
