Final call for MID irrigation incentives

Are you an irrigator in or near the Macalister Irrigation District (MID)? If you’ve been thinking about making irrigation upgrades this year, make sure you get your application to the MID Irrigation Efficiency Incentives Program before Monday, 16 March 2020.

Alexis Kiloran from Agriculture Victoria explained that this iteration of the Irrigation Efficiency Incentives program was coming to the end of its four-year funding cycle.

“This means that there is limited funding available for new projects,” explained Alexis.

“If making some irrigation upgrades has been on your todo list, we suggest you get your application in as soon as possible.

The irrigation program has been running for 20 years now and has been highly successful. Future funding will not be confirmed until the state budget announcement in May so irrigators should treat this as their last chance to get applications in for funding this financial year” said Alexis.

The MID Irrigation Efficiency Incentives Program is run by the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (WGCMA) and Agriculture Victoria and funded by the Victorian Government’s Sustainable Irrigation Program.

WGCMA Land Programs Coordinator, Anthony Goode, said if the program received more applications than could be funded, a reserve list would be created.

“Obviously we want to support irrigators to upgrade their systems,” said Anthony. “If we receive more applications than what we have funding for our reserve list will be used if and when more irrigation project funding becomes available.

“These eligible projects were allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis. The sooner irrigators get their applications in, the greater the chance of them being funded.

“By improving irrigation systems farmers find they are able to put their water entitlement to better use. This saves money and water and can help improve farm productivity.”
