Funding for dairy farmers

Dairy farmers in the Stratford, Sale, Heyfield and Maffra areas could receive up to $15,000 of funding per project to help keep nutrient and sediments on their farms.

Ag-Challenge Consulting has been engaged by West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (WGCMA) to deliver the CORE 4 project in the Macalister Irrigation Area.

Glenn Marriot from Ag-Challenge Consulting said the funding could be used for projects such as upgrading dairy effluent systems or primary laneways to prevent manure runoff into waterways.

“This is a great opportunity for farmers to get some funding to complete upgrades that they may have been planning for a while,” explained Glenn.

“But to be eligible for funding the farmer or their delegate must attend one of four information sessions we’re hosting in the area.”

Macalister Irrigation Area (MIA) Dairy Farmer, Brad Missen said many farms had been amalgamated in the MIA in the past few years.

“With increasing herd sizes, the pressure on existing effluent infrastructure has led to valuable nutrient being concentrated on a smaller percentage of the milking area,” said Brad.

“The CORE 4 program will allow farmers to upgrade their effluent systems to make better use of the nutrient and reduce the nutrient concentration in run-off water.

“After being part of the Fert$mart program, we identified a possible upgrade to our effluent system to install a pump and main pipeline to deliver the effluent to our irrigation delivery points; allowing for the nutrient to be spread over most of the milking pasture.”

“This would minimise the risk of nutrient losses and reduce the need to purchase fertiliser,” continued Brad.

To be eligible for funding through the CORE 4 program the farmer or a delegate must attend one of the following information sessions hosted by AG-Challenge Consulting.

  • Tuesday, 28 November- Bundy Hall, 794 Sale Maffra Rd Bundalaguah
  • Thursday, 30 November- Stratford Mechanics Institute – 17 Hobson St, Stratford
