New funding for local projects

We have been announced as the successful service provider to deliver the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program Regional Land Partnerships.

This project includes five years of core funding to work with the community and our partner organisations (including Landcare, indigenous communities and industry) and employ two part time positions focused on Landcare and Aboriginal Cultural Heritage.

We have funding for three one-year projects to be delivered during 2018/19; Corner Inlet Connections, Sustainable Agriculture and the Alpine Peatlands project.

Corner Inlet Connections

This project will address the key threats to Corner Inlet as identified by the Ramsar Site Management Plan. This includes

  • Working with farmers to reduce sediment and nutrients impacting on seagrass and intertidal habitat
  • Controlling weeds in important saltmarsh habitat on public and private land
  • Protecting shorebirds (particularly hooded plovers) by setting targets and prioritising fox control.

Sustainable Agriculture

The aim of this project is to ensure efficient fertiliser use, leading to improved farm productivity and profitability, while nutrient losses are reduced. This will be delivered through the Fert$mart and Grazfert programs where

  • We will work with industry to engage with farmers in target areas
  • Workshops will be used to help interpret soil tests and understand nutrient requirements for different farm operations.
  • Recommendations will be made for fertiliser inputs specific to individual farms.

Alpine Peatlands

This project continues to implement key actions in the Victorian Alpine Peatlands Spatial Action Plan. It focusses on peatlands on the Baw Baw Plateau and Wellington and Howitt plains. Work crews from GLaWAC will be engaged to deliver some on country works. The focus for this project will be

  • Weed control (primarily willows and soft rush)
  • Pest animal surveillance and control (including deer and wild horses)
  • Reducing foot and vehicle traffic on the peatlands
