Rainbow Creek future

Landholders, locals and those with an interest in the environment are encouraged to attend an upcoming meeting to discuss the future of the Thomson and Rainbow Creek near Cowwarr.

“We’ve been working with local landholders, Catchment Management Authority staff as well as outside experts during 2019 to discuss the future of the Thomson & Rainbow,” said CEO of the West Gippsland Management Authority, Martin Fuller.

This upcoming meeting on June 24 at the Cowwarr Public Hall will bring those discussions together so that the wider public can  hear about what has been happening over the last six months, and continue to have input on proposed works,” concluded Mr Fuller.

The Rainbow Creek is a relatively new waterway in that it formed in the 1950s following a series of flood events on the Thomson River.

The recent works have begun to look at the impact of a future flood, the potential for new channels to be formed and methods of minimising the impact on landholders in such an event.

“Over the last six months we’ve seen the Project Working Group come together as well as a series of one on one interviews with landholders and a heap of computer modelling looking at possible future floods and the impact on the local area,” said WGCMA Waterways Project Officer, David Stork.

“There is a range of information around the health of the river, possible ways of reducing flood impacts on private land as well as computer modelling looking at different flood levels and possible impacts on the local environment.

We are very keen to share this information with locals and other interested parties to both make sure they are in the loop but also to provide them with an opportunity for further feedback on the work that has been done,” concluded Mr Stork.

Guests of the meeting will hear from Professor Ian Rutherford from Melbourne University about river flow and potential flood impacts based on modelling as well as Geoff Park from Natural Decisions, an environmental consultancy firm assisting with the project.
