The environmental condition of rivers in Victoria is assessed by using the Index of Stream Condition (ISC). This brings together data from many sources giving a detailed overview of river condition across the state at a given point in time.
The last ISC benchmarking exercise for our region was in 2010, giving the following results.
Thomson basin
- 55% of stream length in this basin is in good or excellent condition
- 41% in moderate condition
- 3% in poor condition
- 1% in very poor condition.
Latrobe basin
- 34% of stream length in this basin is in good or excellent condition
- 44% in moderate condition
- 9% in poor condition
- 13% in very poor condition.
South Gippsland basin
- 74% of stream length in this basin is in moderate condition
- 10% in good condition
- 10% in poor condition
- 5% in very poor condition.
