West Gippsland Regional Catchment Strategy  

The Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 enabled the formation of ten Catchment Management Authorities across the State of Victoria, which are changed with coordinating the development and implementation of Regional Catchment Strategies in partnership with community, industry and government, to better manage our natural resources for the benefit of people and nature.  
The West Gippsland Regional Catchment Strategy has been developed in partnership with the community, industry and government. The community includes the traditional custodians of the country who were here for thousands of years prior to European settlement, and the people who have since made this region their home whether in the towns or on the land.

Gippsland Regional Forest Agreement (2002) 

This Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) establishes the framework for the management of the forests of the Gippsland region of Victoria.  Parties are committed to ensuring the Agreement is durable and that the obligations and commitments that it contains are delivered to ensure effective conservation, forest management and forest industry outcomes.

 

Gippsland Lakes Coastal Action Plan (1999) 

This Coastal Action Plan details actions to be undertaken by a wide range of organisations, and also sets the long-term objectives and strategic direction for land managers in the Gippsland Lakes region and the wider catchment. 

 

West Gippsland Rabbit Management Action Plan 2001 - 2005

This plan provides the direction for rabbit management in the West Gippsland Region. It is designed to be used by the Catchment Implementation Committees as a guide for their annual on-ground works programs and to assist community groups to understand how regional priorities are set. The plan itself includes sections on the current situation in West Gippsland, the vision for rabbit management in the region, key objectives and strategies, criteria for resource allocation, action plan targets, implementation actions and outputs, and a map of the priority areas of rabbit infestation.

Draft West Gippsland Weed Action Plan 2000 - 2003

The Weed action Plan is a statement of the community's aims for weed control programs in the region and the actions that will have to be taken to achieve them.  The plan provides a framework for the assessment and management of all types of weed problems in West Gippsland.

West Gippsland Strategic Plan for Salinity Management

A new salinity plan for the whole of the WGCMA region is currently under development and expected to be completed early 2004. This plan, the West Gippsland Strategic Plan for Salinity Management (WGSPSM), aims to address the threat of salinity in the West Gippsland CMA Region. It was agreed with the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (WGCMA) and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) that the strategic plan would define the current salinity status and threat for the West Gippsland CMA Region and identify management options. This strategic plan will involve a systematic process for;

(a)defining management zones for the region;

(b)assessing the regional nature and extent of the salinity threat, including a preliminary consideration of priorities; and

(c)identifying management options within each management zone.

Currently being developed.

 

Integrated Coastal Planning for Gippsland Coastal Action Plan (2002) 

The Integrated Coastal Planning for Gippsland - Coastal Action Plan provides for an integrated approach to coastal planning in Gippsland. 

West Gippsland Native Vegetation Plan 
The West Gippsland Native Vegetation Plan has been produced to meet State policy requirements and provide strategic direction to native vegetation management across the region. The Plan has been developed with extensive community input, reflecting priorities determined at the regional level.

Forest Management Plan for Gippsland 
The Gippsland Forest Management Plan establishes strategies for the management of State forests of Gippsland.
The Gippsland Planning Area extends from the Great Dividing Range to the north, the Timbarra and Murray Rivers to the east, Bass Strait to the south and Aberfeldy, Moe and Inverloch to the west, covering over 2.6 million hectares.

Gippsland Regional Farm Forestry and Plantations Strategy 
The Strategy provides a realistic projection of the nature and market orientation of future commercial tree growing activity in the region. It demonstrates the potential for plantations to contribute to regional wealth creation on a sustainable basis. While the Strategy emphasises the scope for expansion of the plantation resource base of Gippsland, it also addresses the opportunities for the sustainable management of private native forests in the region

Bass Coast Shire Local Planning Scheme

Contains a Municipal Strategic Statement and Local Planning Policies. The framework identifies long term directions about land use and development in the municipality and provides the rationale for the zone and overlay requirements and particular provisions in the scheme. 

          

Cape Liptrap Coastal Park Draft Management Plan (2002) 

This draft management plan for Cape Liptrap Coastal Park is now released for public comment.  It contains information on the resources of the park, a review of past and present uses, management aims and management strategies. 

 

Gippsland Lakes Shore Erosion and Revegetation Strategy (2002) 

This Shore Erosion and Revegetation Strategy describes shoreline variability around the Gippsland Lakes, presents results of photographic comparisons and discusses a range of possible actions in response to shoreline change. This study builds on early analysis of shoreline change around the Gippsland Lakes undertaken by Dr. Eric Bird for the period 1957- 83 (Bird, 1978 & 1983).

 

Alpine National Park Management Plans (1993) 

Management strategies cover resource use, conservation and protection, visitor use and other authorised uses. 

 

Wilsons Promontory National Park Management Plan (2002)  

The Management Plan for Wilsons Promontory National Park is approved for implementation.  Its purpose is to direct all aspects of management in the park until the plan is reviewed. 

 

Baw Baw National Park Management Plan Central Gippsland Region National Parks and Public Land (1992)

This publication has been out of print for some years now.

Lake Wellington Catchment Irrigation and Dryland Salinity Management Plan (1993)

Concern about the impact of salinity within the Macalister Irrigation District and surrounding areas was expressed in the mid 1980s. There was general awareness throughout Australia that salinity was a significant problem. This district had already had a salinity problem in the Nambrok area in the 1960’s caused by the installation of an irrigation system as part of the soldier settlement scheme. Very little consideration was given to the impact this would have in the future. Within three years the watertable rose by up to 5 metres.

 

By 1989, 19 salinity groups had been formed in Victoria. At the same time salt affected land was beginning to be seen throughout the MID and surrounding areas. The eastern end of Clydebank was severely affected and many thought it was because of the opening of the Lakes (at Lakes Entrance) to the sea. However, when piezometers were put in on the shore of Lake Wellington and the water level rose 1 metre above lake level, it became apparent that the high water table was catchment, and mostly irrigation driven.

 

A publicly-funded groundwater pump was installed on the Bengworden Road at Clydebank and the groundwater discharged into the Lake Wellington main drain. Some objected to the ground water pump and a Landcare salinity awareness group was formed.

 

The Lake Wellington Community Working Group was formed in the late 1980s and spent the next 5 years developing the plan. In responding to the Draft Lake Wellington Catchment Salinity Management Plan, the Government endorsed the following priorities;

Priority 1 Develop sub-regional salt disposal and drainage plans and submit to the Government for endorsement.

Priority 2 Install public groundwater pumps in ‘category one’ areas where the benefits exceed the costs.

Priority 3 Increase the use of existing private groundwater pumps in ‘categories two and three’.

Priority 4 Increase the number of private pumps in the category two areas of the Maffra and Rosedale Sub-Regions.

Priority 5 Living with salinity options in those areas which cannot benefit from the groundwater pumping program.

Priority 6 Improving irrigation water management to reduce groundwater recharge and to reduce irrigation run-off (and therefore nutrient discharge) into surface drains.

Priority 7 Pasture and tree establishment for recharge control.

 

Following endorsement of the plan, the Government appointed 12 people to the newly formed Wellington Salinity Group, which reported directly to the state government. This group implemented and managed the plan with the assistance of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Southern Rural Water and Sinclair Knight Merz.

 

The LWCSMP was reviewed in 2001 by consultants Nolan-ITU & EnPlan, with the major issues identified as;

(a)The need for improved identification and quantification of the regional impactof salinity;

(b)Addressing the future balance of the allocation of the resources between dryland and irrigation areas for salinity control;

(c)Quantification of the impacts of different control measures on short and long-term reduction of accessions to watertables;

(d)Linkage with other programs;

(e)The need to re-evaluate the existing emphasis on drainage in the Lake Wellington Catchment SMP compared to the impact of recharge control and improved irrigation management; and

(f)The need for outcome focussed annual reporting with implementation indicators as primary measures of performance.

Alpine National Wonnangatta - Moroka Planning Unit Management Plan 

Baw Baw National Park Management Plan 
This Management Plan for Baw Baw National Parks' purpose is to direct all aspects of management in the Park until the Plan is reviewed.  A Proposed Management Plan for the Park was published in December 1991. A total of 40 submissions were received.

Holey Plains State Park Management Plan 
This Management Plan for Holey Plains State Park is approved for implementation. Its purpose is to direct all aspects of management of the Park until the Plan is reviewed. A Draft Management Plan was published in August 1997. A total of 11 submissions were received.

Morwell National Park Management Plan 
This Approved Plan provides for the protection of the Park’s important natural and cultural features, and ensures quality visitor experiences.

Mt Worth State Park Management Plan  
This Plan provides a framework for the future management of the Park and will ensure protection of the significant conservation values of the Park.

Tarra Bulga National Park Management Plan 
This Plan will ensure that Tarra-Bulga National Park provides a range of recreational and educational opportunities without degradation of its very important conservation values.

The Lakes National Park and Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park Management Plan 
This Approved Plan establishes the long-term management framework for protecting the great natural and recreational values of the two Parks, and ensures that they will continue to play an important role in nature-based tourism.
